Match Recap: NYRB II Defeats Hartford Athletic 2-0 on Futures Night

MONTCLAIR, N.J. (September 4, 2021) – New York Red Bulls II (4-13-4, 16 points) defeated Hartford Athletic (8-9-3, 27 points), 2-0, on Saturday night at MSU Soccer Park.

New York opened the scoring in the 12th as forward Omar Sowe’s pass set up a long run for midfielder Jake LaCava, who surged up the field and found the back of the net. The goal was his fifth of the season, matching his total from the 2020 season.

The home side doubled their advantage in second half stoppage time, as forward Serge Ngoma grabbed possession of the ball from a Hartford defender and scored off a one-on-one with the Hartford goalkeeper in the 92nd minute.

The victory for New York was the first since July 7, and it was the first victory over Hartford since August 10, 2019.

New York had its best defensive performance of the season, holding Hartford to zero shots on goal, marking the first clean sheet of the season.

Following Saturday’s match, New York will travel to face the Tampa Bay Rowdies on Saturday, September 11 at Al Lang Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET with coverage on ESPN+.
