LeBron James impressed by Tom Brady’s hot start to the NFL season
On Twitter, the NBA titan and pop culture icon had nothing but respect for Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady’s first touchdown drive in 2021.
“Greatness recognizes greatness, and is shadowed by it.”
The famous quote by literary critic Harold Bloom encapsulates LeBron James’ reaction to Tom Brady’s second drive of the season: a nine-play, 94-yard attack that resulted in the first NFL touchdown of 2021.
Brady’s surgical precision cut through the Dallas Cowboys defensive coverage with passes to Mike Evans, Rob Gronkowski, Antonio Brown and Chris Godwin. Key plays included two connections to Brown that advanced the offense 44 yards, as well as clutch passes to Godwin in the red zone that brought the team their first score since February.
The touchdown drive, which last a little over four minutes, got the attention of the sports world — and notably, of one of its greatest players of all time.
LeBron James is impressed by Tom Brady’s greatness
James, who many argue is a GOAT in his own right, is certainly a contender for the title. Eighteen seasons, fifteen playoff stretches and four NBA championships are a few of the accolades that James has accumulated as the NBA icon of the 21st century. The only player to rival that title would be Kobe Bryant, a longtime opponent who congratulated James on passing him on the all-time NBA scoring list the day before his tragic death.
Like Brady, James has been playing the game he loves at the highest level for decades, bringing three different franchises — the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Miami Heat, and the Los Angeles Lakers — NBA Championship trophies. Brady joined James in that exclusive stratosphere this past season, being only the fourth quarterback in NFL history to make the Super Bowl on two different teams. Only Peyton Manning and Tom Brady have brought the Lombardi back for each of their franchises.
James’ respect for Brady was made abundantly clear this summer when he invited the impeccable quarterback to talk shop on his HBO-produced show, The Shop. While James wasn’t there, Draymond Green facilitated a fascinating conversation between special guests Tom Brady, Kid Cudi and Chelsea Handler. It was here that Brady spoke candidly about his opinions, including his frustration that a team passed on him last offseason and took another quarterback.
As greatness recognizes greatness, it seems that both Brady and James will continue to shadow one another’s illustrious careers with praise and admiration.
