Coronation Street star Jude Riordan has won the Best Newcomer Award at the National Television Awards, becoming the youngest NTAs winner ever.

The 10-year-old gave an adorable acceptance speech during the ceremony tonight (September 9), which involved presenter Joel Dommett having to lift him up so he could reach the microphone.

The young actor was up against four other new soap stars: Emile John (Emmerdale), Olivia D'Lima (Casualty), Rhiannon Clements (Hollyoaks) and Rose Ayling-Ellis (EastEnders).

"Oh my word! Oh my word! This is amazing," he said in his speech.

He went on to thank his fans for voting for him and his Corrie co-stars. He ended his speech by saying thank you to "all my family for supporting me, and erm yeah that's mainly it!"

Previously, the youngest ever NTAs winner was Sam Aston aged 11, who also won the Best Newcomer award for his role in Coronation Street back in 2004.

Riordan was cast in Corrie last year as Nick Tilsley's long-lost son Sam Blakeman, after appearing in Sky One's Brassic.

Sam was introduced into the show as part of a long-running storyline for Nick (Ben Price), who had to make a number of difficult decisions about his involvement in his son's life, while trying to support his partner Leanne (Jane Danson) through her own son's illness.

When he was originally cast, his mother Kellie said: "We are incredibly proud of his achievements, he's only 9 and seems to have found his love. Cast and crew are lovely and very welcoming, he's fitted in very well. We think he will love his time on the cobbles."

The soap also took home the win for Serial Drama Performance, given to Mollie Gallagher for portraying Nina Lucas on the show. She gave an emotional acceptance speech after receiving the award for her acting in a long-running storyline about hate crime.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 7.30pm and 8.30pm on ITV. The National Television Awards 2021 also aired on ITV.
