BALTIMORE—Matt Harvey’s season with the Orioles might be over. The Orioles placed the 32-year-old right-hander on the 10-day injured list because of right knee inflammation and recalled infielder Richie Martin from Triple-A Norfolk on Thursday.
Harvey, who started Wednesday night’s 9-8 Orioles win, has a 6-14 record with a 6.27 ERA. His 28 starts and 14 losses tie him for the American League lead.
Signed to a minor league contract before spring training, Harvey won a job and a $1 million major league contract. He recorded three straight wins from April 20th-May 1st.
He then lost 10 straight decisions before he won three more from July 18th-30th, pitching 18 1/3 shutout innings, allowing just 10 hits.
On August 4th, Harvey left a start at Yankee Stadium because of a knee injury and hasn’t won since. On Wednesday night, Harvey allowed four runs, one unearned, on nine hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Because the Orioles have a number of young pitchers they’d like to see — Keegan Akin, Mike Baumann, Chris Ellis, Zac Lowther, Alexander Wells and possibly Dean Kremer — it’s possible that Harvey might not pitch again for the Orioles.
Martin played 15 games with the Orioles last month and hit .227 with a home run and five RBIs. His addition is timely because Ramón Urias, who contributed a key pinch-hit in the Orioles’ nine-run eighth inning on Wednesday night, hasn’t started since Sunday because of an upper leg injury.
Martin missed much of the season because of a broken left wrist. In 27 games with the Tides, Martin ws hitting .208 with a home run and five RBIs.
Notes: Trey Mancini, who missed three games because of an oblique injury returned to the lineup Thursday night. … Ellis will start the first game of the Orioles’ series against Toronto on Friday night against Robbie Ray. Akin will start one of the games of Saturday’s doubleheader, and manager Brandon Hyde said the team hasn’t decided on the other Saturday starter or Sunday’s. They’ll call up an extra player for the doubleheader. … Ellis has been charged with a hit in his five-inning start against the Yankees last Saturday. Aaron Judge’s liner that was dropped by leftfielder Ryan McKenna was scored an error, but it was changed to a hit. Ellis had been credited with five no-hit innings.

Rich, after hearing that Kjerstad could resume baseball activities about 10 days ago or so, I’ve heard no updates. West’s he doing now? Is he expected to be a full go by next spring if he has no setbacks? If so, where is he projected to play?

Can we finish the season with a rotation of Means, Akin, Lowther, Ellis and A. Wells please....or maybe rest Means soon and put Baumann in there. Lets see what they all have, with no interruptions!!

So here’s my report from beautiful City Island, home of the Hbg. Senators. GR pitched 3 innings, faced the minimum 9 hitters, no hits or walks and 5 Ks. He threw 34 pitches, 23 of them strikes. Word is they removed him because he’s at 98 innings on the season and they wanna limit him to 110. Being that there were probably more Bowie fans than Senators fans at the game we were all disappointed to see him not come out for the 4th inning. Westburg, who hasn’t hit well at Bowie yet, hit the 2nd pitch of the game for a HR. Also going deep for Bowie was Dorrian, Watson and Dashbach. Similar to the parent club, all were solo HRs. All in all I saw what I came to see.

Hey DG: thanks for report. Sounds like you had a great time and got to see Bowie’s pitching and hitting on the same night, which is just about every night. I still think it would help if the Orioles allowed the minor league teams to play some games at Camden Yards. I don’t want to suggest that they play the same day as the parent club, as that could make for some difficult comparisons most nights.
Chuck, it’s an idea that appeals only to the hardcore fan, and would draw far smaller crowds than you saw this week.
Be willing to bet that if people knew Rutschman & crew were playing one game they’d draw larger crowds than what you think…go O’s…
