Natalie Morales and Mark Duplass On Shooting Their Feature Film Language Lessons Via Zoom [Exclusive Interview]

It’s getting a little redundant to say that the last year and a half has been challenging… Yet here I am saying it again. Filmmakers have had to work outside and be very creative to make their visions come to the small or big screen. It also provided writers with a new perspective on life. Having to stay at home so much definitely changed the way we live and even the way we interact with one another. With that being said, would it even be possible to develop any kind of relationship during that/this time? The film Language Lessons from Shout Studios happily answers that question.

Language Lessons is directed by Natalie Morales. From a script written by Morales and Mark Duplass. Both of these great stars are also the stars of the film. What is unique about this film is that it all takes place via our favorite new form of communication, Zoom. I feel that seeing this film from this very timely point of view makes their interactions feel a lot more personal. Allowing us the audience to care for these two characters Adam and Cariño.

With Language Lessons being released tomorrow in select theaters, LRM Online’s Emmanuel Gomez spoke with both Natalie Morales and Mark Duplass. During the conversation, we talk about their inspiration for the characters and the story. We also talk about their process of making a film where they are basically on Zoom the whole time. More importantly, we also cover the topic of platonic friendships between guys and girls that seem to be missing from a lot of films these days. You can check out the full interview down below!

Here is the synopsis for Language Lessons

When Adam’s (Mark Duplass) husband surprises him with weekly Spanish lessons, he’s unsure about where or how this new element will fit into his already structured life. But when tragedy strikes, his Spanish teacher, Cariño (Natalie Morales), becomes a lifeline he didn’t know he needed.  Adam develops an unexpected and complicated emotional bond with Cariño. But do you really know someone just because you’ve experienced a traumatic moment with them? Bittersweet, honest, and at times darkly funny, LANGUAGE LESSONS is a disarmingly moving exploration of platonic love.

Language Lessons from Shout! Studios premeires in Select Theaters Nationwide on September 10.
