FRAMINGHAM – The Framingham High boys soccer team opens its season Thursday, September 9 on the road against Shrewsbury High at 6 p.m.

More than 120 boys tried out for the soccer program at Framingham High this fall, said Coach Jon Wood.

Framingham High has a freshmen, junior varsity, and varsity teams, with 23 on varsity. Dan Avery is the head coach for the varsity team again this year.

“Our goals this year are to make the tournament. We also want to win the bay state league title as the the last time we were allowed to play we won the league in 2019,” said Coach Wood.

The Flyers did not have a season in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“The pandemic has made prep for this season difficult with the regular inconvenience of masks and distancing and testing etc,” said Coach Wood. “More importantly, however, the pandemic cost our entire program a year of league play, varsity experience, camaraderie and continuity as we weren’t allowed to play.”

The team’s captains this season are senior defenseman John Halpin, junior defenseman Ben Sharon, and junior forward Jack Carney.

“Halpin represents our player with the most varsity experience. He was on the team as a sophomore in 2019,” said Coach Wood.

There are six seniors on varsity this season.

The Flyers goalie will be junior Tyler Ingham.

“Senior Bruno Kajiwara is our backup. He also plays defense,” said Coach Wood.

“It is a fantastic group of kids and the coaches already enjoy coming to practice every day. We hope to hit the ground running and close any gaps created by our year hiatus,” said the long-time soccer coach.

The Flyers home opener is Saturday, September 11 at 1:30 p.m. at Framingham High.
