UPDATE 9/9/2021 @ 4 p.m.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - The Huntington Police Department has opened a homicide investigation following the discovery of a woman’s body Thursday morning.

According to HPD, the body was discovered inside of an apartment in the 500 block of 6th Avenue.

Police were called to the scene just before 10 a.m. in reference to a welfare check.

Police did tell WSAZ there’s evidence the woman died from gunshot wounds.

We talked to a man who lives across the street and he said one of his tenants heard gunshots last night.

“She went to bed somewhere around 11, 11:30 p.m. and about 12 it woke her up as she heard two gunshots and she thought it was right out here, but I guess it was across the street,” said Eddie Napier.

Ted Taylor who lives down the street, says there is a lot of criminal activity in the neighborhood.

“There was a point where I didn’t even feel comfortable bringing my grandchildren here in fear of what they were going to see. I won’t even go into what I’ve seen. It’s been pretty bad,” Taylor said. “It disturbs me but that’s not the only incident that happened. There’s been many times where I’ve heard gunshots.”

Further information has not been released at this time; however, police tell WSAZ they hope to release more information later Thursday evening.
