List of Central New York memorials, events marking the 20th anniversary of 9/11 attacks

This Saturday marks the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

On Sept. 11, 2001, hijacked airplanes hit the World Trade Center towers in New York City and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. Another hijacked plane crashed in Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

In all, nearly 3,000 people lost their lives that day and thousands more were injured.

Communities across Central New York are hosting events to remember the 20th anniversary of those attacks.

Onondaga County

CICERO

Cicero Fire Engine House, 8377 Brewerton Road

8 a.m. to 11 a.m.

At each time that the planes hit the World Trade Center towers, and for the times at which the towers collapsed, there will be a moment of silence. There will also be a bagpiper. Social distancing will be observed, and attendees are requested to bring a mask in the event they will be needed.

DEWITT

Town of DeWitt 9/11 Monument, Town Hall

2 p.m.

A memorial service will be held at the 9/11 Monument at the DeWitt Town Hall. The event will be livestreamed and residents are asked to view the ceremony via Facebook from their homes. Only participants and officials will be onsite for the event. If you are unable to view the live streamed event, the video will be on the Town of DeWitt website for viewing.

MANLIUS

Manlius Fire Station, 8200 Cazenovia Road

10 a.m.

The Manlius Fire Department will be holding a remembrance ceremony that will include a dedication ceremony for the new memorial patio. The public is invited.

MINOA

Lewis Park

8:30 a.m.

Minoa will be holding a memorial march with first responders and the Syracuse Scottish Pipe Band. The march will begin at Lewis Park and end with a memorial service in front of the village municipal building.

SYRACUSE

Le Moyne College campus, in front of Grewen Hall

1:30 p.m. Friday

Members of the campus community will be placing several hundred American flags to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11.

Onondaga Community College, 9/11 memorial, outside Whitney Applied Technology Center

10 a.m.

There will be remarks from guest speakers and music. A memorial wreath will be placed at the site. A single rose will be placed in the Gordon Student Center lobby at the Alumni Faces panel of OCC alum Wendy Faulkner, who lost her life in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center.

Le Moyne College campus, Grewen Hall

8:46 a.m.

A moment of silence will be observed as the bells in the tower of Grewen Hall ring 11 times at 8:46 a.m. (first tower hit), 9:03 a.m. (second tower hit), 9:37 a.m. (Pentagon hit), and 10:03 a.m. (Shanksville, PA plane crash).

Le Moyne College campus, Panasci Family Chapel

7 p.m. Sunday

Mass will be offered in the chapel in remembrance of the victims of the attacks, and specifically for the members of the Le Moyne community who lost their lives: Daniel R. Brandhorst ‘82, his partner Ronald Gamboa and their son, David who were passengers on United Flight 175.; Brian Novotny ‘90 and Todd Pitman, son of Eric Pitman ‘67, both of whom worked for Cantor Fitzgerald; Don Kauth, uncle of Courtney Graham ‘04; and Michael Cahill, husband of Colleen Casey Cahill ‘85.

Syracuse University campus, Hendricks Chapel, Main Chapel

8:46 to 9:30 a.m.

The ceremony will include reflection, offerings of remembrance and resilience, musical tributes, and the ceremonial ringing of 20 chimes and lighting of 20 candles. Will be livestreamed via Zoom.

Fayette Firefighter’s Memorial Park

8:30 a.m.

The ceremony will include a candle lighting and a 17-minute period of silence to mark the time between the attacks on the World Trade Center. The event is not open to the public and the city will not be livestreaming the service.

Cayuga County

AUBURN

South Lawn, Memorial City Hall, 24 South St.

8:40 a.m.

Auburn will host a ceremony in which the old Wheeler bell on top of city hall will ring at the times of the attacks, at the time of the collapse of the South Tower, the crashing of Flight 93 in Pennsylvania and the collapse of the North Tower.

Emerson Park, 6914 E. Lake Road

Noon to 6 p.m.

A remembrance event will be held at the park with food, music and family events.

Falcon Park, 130 N. Division St.

7 p.m.

Auburn police and fire departments will host a remembrance ceremony.

Jefferson County

FORT DRUM

9/11 memorial in front of Clark Hall, Fort Drum

8:30 a.m. Friday

Fort Drum will hold an annual wreath-laying ceremony. Members of the public wishing to attend who do not have a Department of Defense ID card will need to stop at the main gate to obtain a visitors’ pass.

Madison County

CANASTOTA

Canastota Reflection Park, South Peterboro St.

8:30 a.m.

Memorial ceremony and prayer invocation.

CHITTENANGO

Stickles Park, Genesee St.

8:30 a.m.

Chittenango will be hosting a ceremony of remembrance and reflection. There will be a short program with music, reflection and a candle lighting. Social distancing will be observed. In the event of rain, the event will move to the Chittenango Fire Station.

ONEIDA

Oneida City Hall 109 N. Main St.

Noon

Memorial ceremony and prayer invocation.

Oneida County

MARCY

Whitesboro High School, 6000 NY-291

8 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

A walk will be held along the path between the Whitesboro High School and the Canal Park, ending off Lealand Avenue by Breezes Banquet Hall. A limited quantity of shirts and souvenir remembrance tags will be available for purchase. Water stations will be available and a shuttle service back to the school will be provided. Food trucks and music will follow the walk at 11 a.m. You can join the guest list and let them know if you will be purchasing a shirt here.

SYLVAN BEACH

The Bandstand downtown

7 p.m.

The American Legion Post 1153 and Sylvan Beach Fire Department will host a memorial ceremony at the bandstand downtown between Eddie’s Restaurant and the State Police barracks. Visitors are requested to respect the no open container policy, which includes the beach.

Ontario County

GENEVA

Scandling Campus Center, Hobart and William Smith Colleges

11 a.m. Friday

Community outreach and conversation. Community members may listen to episodes of the Story Corps 9/11 Initiative.

The Quad, Hobart and William Smith Colleges

1 p.m.

Members of the Kappa Alpha Society will place 2,977 flags on the hill of the Quad, representing the life of each person lost in the attacks. The display will include American flags and 548 flags representing the lives of people lost from countries around the world.

Boswell Field at David J. Urick Stadium, Hobart and William Smith Colleges

1 p.m.

The Hobart College football team will honor first responders, recovery workers and firefighters who serve the college and Geneva communities, prior to their game against Morrisville State College.

Oswego County

FULTON

CNY Arts Center, 121 Cayuga St.

Dates and Times: 8 p.m. Thursday, Sep. 9 and Friday Sep. 10; 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, Sep. 11; 3 p.m., Sunday, Sep. 12

A special play will be performed called “September Bears.” It is about a teacher in New York City who needed to comfort her students who were traumatized by the events of 9/11. She used teddy bears to comfort them, and the movement grew as she helped spread teddy bears throughout the New York City School system.

Attendees are encouraged to bring new or gently loved teddy bears to the theater that will be donated to local first responders and agencies that help children in crisis.

The Sep. 9 performance is pay what you can, remaining shows are $12 for adults and $10 for students age 10 and up and senior citizens.

MEXICO

Mexico High School Grandstands, 3338 State Route 104

9 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Trail Life NY-1613 is hosting a 9/11 memorial stair climb. The climb will include 2,112 steps.

NEW HAVEN

New Haven Elementary School, 4320 NY-104

6:45 p.m. to 7:45 p.m.

There will be a 9/11 memory walk from the school to the New Haven firehouse. Adults, please bring a flashlight or other lighting, glow sticks will be provided for the children. Walk will be followed by a memorial service and refreshments.

OSWEGO

City of Oswego

6:30 a.m. Law Enforcement and First Responders Sunrise Run

Procession of first responders and emergency vehicles across the Bridge Street Bridge heading west bound – ending the run at the Oswego Police Department.

8:30 a.m. 9-11 Ceremony at the Oswego Fire Department

Ceremony for members of the public, as well as participating emergency personnel, to honor and remember all that was sacrificed during the 9/11 attacks.

9:15 a.m. Procession to Breitbeck Park

Emergency vehicles will lead a procession from the Oswego Fire Department Headquarters to Breitbeck Park. The public is asked to follow behind the procession.

10 a.m. Blue Mass at Breitbeck Park

Emergency personnel and the public are invited to an outdoor mass at Breitbeck Park.

PHOENIX
