Tottenham’s Skipp, Son to be assessed ahead of Crystal Palace match

No matter what happens, Tottenham Hotspur are set to have a few players unavailable for selection for this Saturday’s Premier League match at Crystal Palace. However, two of their players with injury concerns could still play a role.

According to Dan Kilpatrick in the Standard, Tottenham are set to assess both Son Heung-Min and Oliver Skipp ahead of the trip to Palace, but it’s still not clear whether either will participate in this game either as a starter or on the bench.

Skippy limped off the pitch during a England U21 match earlier in the week with what looked like a groin injury, and which later was described as a “tight groin.” Sonny, meanwhile, had some discomfort in his calf in training with Korea and was held out of the 1-0 World Cup qualifying match over Lebanon earlier in the week for precautionary reasons.

If I had to guess, I’d probably suggest that Skipp’s injury is the more serious of the two and that the club may not take chances with aggravating his situation against Palace. But the same could be said for Sonny as well, so we really just won’t know until we do. Spurs are already set to be without Cuti Romero, Davinson Sanchez, and Gio Lo Celso, who all traveled to South America for World Cup qualifiers and are all now quarantining in Croatia until September 16. Ryan Sessegnon also injured his hamstring while with the England U21s and will not feature against Palace.

Finally, there’s Steven Bergwijn, who was photographed with bandages and an icepack on his ankle after a World Cup qualifier with the Netherlands. There’s not a lot of information on him as well, but the reports of an actual injury were pretty nebulous and based on that one photo, so who knows.

Skipp missing out on Saturday’s match could be an opportunity for either Tanguy Ndombele or Harry Winks to slot in beside Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in Spurs’ midfield. If Sonny can’t go and Bergwijn isn’t available, then perhaps Nuno Espirito Santo might opt to bring in Bryan Gil, or make some other tactical tweaks that we haven’t anticipated.
