Manchester United Have Decided On Their New £100m Midfield General

Manchester United Have Decided On Their New £100m Midfield General

West Ham's Declan Rice is thought to be the top name on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's list of targets

Manchester United will look to add the latest piece of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's jigsaw next summer with the acquisition of Declan Rice.

Speculation has been rife even since before the 22-year-old's impressive Euro 2020 campaign with England. He helped West Ham to European football qualification last season and according to the MEN, Solskjaer views him as the future of his midfield.

Since arriving in the Old Trafford hot seat in 2018, Solksjaer has slowly been crafting his side around the model he was a huge part of during Sir Alex Ferguson, where he famously scored the winner in the UEFA Champions League final against Bayern Munich in 1999.

And now he is hoping Rice, thought to be valued around £100 million, can join Pogba, Fernandes and Ronaldo in taking the club back to the promise land of domestic and european glory.

Criticism has fallen heavily on Brazilian Fred with United fans not willing to suffer any further mediocrity. The Red Devils haven't won a trophy since 2017 and supporters are seeing signs of progress following last season's displays. Donny van der Beek was another who hasn't been able to set the world alight in red, whie and black and he could be offered as a makeweight in the deal. He was thought to be close to a move to Everton before the transfer window slammed shut last week.

Solskjaer has been quick to squash any talk of other club's players, including Borrusia Dortmund's Jude Bellingham and Erling Haaland. Paul Pogba, who United hope will sign a new contract soon, has been linked with a move to Real Madrid. Pogba remains a huge attraction to any potential players coming in and Darren Fletcher, now United's Technical Director confirmed on a fan forum recently that players such as Rice are asking questions about the direction and prospects Manchester United now after some time in the wilderness.

Chelsea have also been monitoring Rice in the past. It is well documented that he left the club's academy at Cobham six years ago to join West Ham but Thomas Tuchel's influence and his close bond with Mason Mount and other England teammates could lean him towards Stamford Bridge.

It is United though who want to prove this season why Old Trafford is the place for the defensive midfielder who scored for England last week in Hungary.
