Cubs edge Reds, Cardinals win, Braves lose Wednesday

Jason Heyward hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Chicago Cubs a 4-1 win over Cincinnati at Wrigley Field. The Reds have dropped their last five series and are a game back of the San Diego Padres for the final NL Wild Card spot. The Reds and Cubs are both off today.

Elsewhere in the National League

Adam Wainwright put on a vintage performance as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-4. The 40-year-old pitcher went eight-and-a-third innings, allowing four runs and striking out four to earn his 15th win. Yadier Molina backed the strong outing with a two-run homer in the first for St. Louis, which snapped a four-game losing skid. The series wraps up this afternoon at Busch Stadium.

The Washington Nationals doubled up the Atlanta Braves 4-2 last night. The Braves continue to lead the NL East by 2 1/2 games over Philadelphia. The series concludes tonight in Atlanta.

There are four new members in the Baseball Hall of Fame. The 2020 class was inducted during a ceremony from Cooperstown, New York Wednesday highlighted by New York Yankee great Derek Jeter, who was joined by fellow inductees Larry Walker, Ted Simmons and former Players Association boss Marvin Miller. Last summer’s ceremony in Cooperstown was delayed because of the pandemic.
