Wildcat cross country Coach Wendy Landes is excited about what is going on in her sport in Ponca City.

The runners have been working hard and have participated in three meets so far this season. The first meet was Aug. 14 at Enid, the second at Owasso and the third was last week at Carl Albert in Midwest City.

Landes is especially excited about her high school boys team which includes state qualifier senior Mason Blochowiak.

Speaking of Blochowiak, Landes says “He has already improved this season and is looking for a repeat (to state).” “Joining him is Burton Miner (a junior and team captain), and Andrew Mitchell (senior and captain), as well as sophomore Joel Menchaca, senior Chase Allensworth and sophomore Ryan Sylestine. Our seventh runner has changed week to week with Jack Busch and Keegan Goff competing on the varsity team so far. This is a good group of runners that works hard and looks for improvement.”

Speaking of the high school girls, Landes says, “We have one senior, Kennedy Brown, returning to the team. She continues to work hard and is also one of our captains. Joining her are freshman Julia Looper, who won the Enid meet and placed again at Carl Albert; and sophomore and captain Lorin Scott returns and continues to improve. Others on the varsity team are junior Lindsay Alvarez, freshman Madi Fortney, sophomore Regan Loney and freshman Kassidy Hines. I look for solid improvement from these ladies throughout the year.

“Our junior varsity runners work hard trying to get a spot on the varsity. We have a larger group of seniors so there will be big shoes to fill next year. Most of the runners started running club back in June and ran throughout the hot, hot summer months. There is tremendous dedication on this year’s team.

“The junior high runners never cease to amaze me. They do good things every single meet. There are more eighth graders than in the past so I am hopeful they will continue to run in high school.

Ponca City did quite well in the Enid meet. The varsity boys were the winning team with Blochowiak coming in first as an individual. Miner was second, Mitchell, third; Sylestine, seventh; Allensworth, eighth; Menchaca, 11th and Busch 21st. The varsity girls were second as a team and Looper was the individual winner. Brown came in eighth, Scott, 11th; Loney, 17th; Alvarez, 18th; Ryanna Sylestine, 19th; and Brianna Lee, 21st. In junior varsity boys competition, A. J. Landes was second as an individual, Keegan Goff was 8th, Tristan Feathers was 12th and Tyler Epperson was 15th.

At Owasso, a relay team including Looper, Bryce, Scott and Brown, finished 15th out of 35 teams in girls competition and a team of Blochowiak, Miner, Sylestine and Mitchell finished fourth out of 49.

At Carl Albert, the boys varsity finished fourth. Blochowiak was fourth (out of 174 runners), Miner was 11th and Mitchell was 18th. Looper was 18th out of 137 runners on the girls side.
