The Atlanta Hawks have John Collins as their worst contract from the offseason

The Atlanta Hawks had an incredible offseason where they hit every metric that they could have wanted. They improved the very end of the bench by re-signing Skylar Mays to another two-way contract and added Sharife Cooper via the draft and then signing him to a two-way deal.

They also bought back Lou Williams on a deal that could see him end his career in his home state and also means that he will be able to mentor the young team. The Hawks also re-signed their insurance policy from last season Solomon Hill, surely hoping that he will not have to do it all for the team again this season.

The Hawks also fixed a couple of other roster issues during this current offseason. They signed Gorgui Dieng to a single-season deal which helps secure their center position particularly as Onyeka Okongwu will be out for the first three months of the season. They also traded Kris Dunn and Bruno Fernando to the Boston Celtics in a three-way deal, getting Delon Wright as their reserve point guard in return.

The Atlanta Hawks secured their future by extending their core.

Both Trae Young and Clint Capela received extensions this offseason. However, the contract we want to talk about is the deal signed by John Collins. As most fans are aware, Collins held out on signing his rookie extension last season, making himself a restricted free agent this season.

While there appeared to be a small market for Collins, this quickly evaporated. General Manager Travis Schlenk could have tried to use this to his advantage in an effort to drive Collins’ contract price down but he did not. Instead, he signed the four-year man from Wake Forest to a five-year, $125.0 million deal.

A recent article by Zach Buckley from Bleacher Report named this as the Hawks’ worst contract. They also noted that the Hawks are in an amazing position if their 23-year-old core player is seen as having the worst deal. This is truly a tremendous position that the Hawks find themselves in, some might say they are well ahead of their opposition, particularly if the salary cap explodes.
