Come From Away is set in a small Canadian town called Gander, in the days after the September 11 attacks. All planes heading to the U.S. were grounded, and the musical tells the true story of the 38 flights and 7,000 people who found themselves stranded in the tiny town.

The people of Newfoundland graciously welcomed the "come from aways" into their community, forming lasting bonds as locals and visitors tried to cope with the aftermath of 9/11.

The live performance that will stream on Apple TV+ was filmed at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in New York City. The taping took place after lockdown, when Broadway was opening back up, and the audience was filled with 9/11 survivors and frontline workers.

Come From Away was first performed at a Canadian college in 2013 and arrived on Broadway in 2017.

The original Broadway production was nominated for seven Tony awards in 2017, with Christopher Ashley winning for best direction of a musical. Come From Away was also nominated for a Grammy in 2018 for best musical theater album.

The musical was optioned by The Mark Gordon Company (Speed, The Day After Tomorrow, Source Code), which had planned to turn it into a feature film. According to The Hollywood Reporter, those plans changed during the pandemic and the filmed stage version was produced instead.

Husband-and-wife duo David Hein and Irene Sankoff wrote the music, lyrics and book of Come From Away, and act as executive producers on the filmed version for Apple TV+.
