Pittsburgh Penguins GM Ron Hextall confirms that Sidney Crosby will miss the start of the season

The Pittsburgh Penguins could be looking at a pretty rocky start to the 2021-22 season after captain Sidney Crosby has undergone a surgical procedure on his wrist on Wednesday that will have him sidelined for the next six weeks.

Penguins GM Ron Hextall shared the news with the media on Wednesday and commenting on the matter, stating that the procedure has been something that Crosby has needed for some time.

"This is not a new injury for Sid. It is something that he has played through for years. After exhausting all minimally-invasive options and much discussion, it was decided that surgery was in his best interest."

Crosby suited up in 55 of the Pens' 56 games last season, notching 24 goals and 62 points over that span.


The news is not good for the Pens, who are already expected to have Evgeny Malkin sidelined for the entirety of training camp as well. No word yet on whether he will be ready to go when the Pens open their season against the defending Stanley Cup Champion Tampa Bay Lightning on October 12th.
