Miguel Cabrera and Robbie Grossman had four hits apiece as the Detroit Tigers beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 5-1 on Wednesday night at PNC Park.
The Tigers (66-75) salvaged one win from the three-game series against the Pirates (50-90), who were seeking their first sweep of the season.
Grossman and Cabrera -- batting third and fourth in the lineup -- stole the show, going a combined 8-for-9.
Grossman had three singles and a solo home run.
Cabrera had three singles and a double, driving in three runs. After finishing Tuesday night with three consecutive base hits, Cabrera now has a career-high seven consecutive hits. His career total -- 2,971 -- is only 29 shy of 3,000.
Tigers starter Matt Manning was hit by a hard ground ball on the left knee on the final play of the third inning. The ball ricocheted to catcher Dustin Garneau, who threw out Pirates batter Colin Moran at first base. Manning fell to the ground and stayed there a few moments before being helped to his feet by head athletic trainer Doug Teter. Manning was diagnosed with a left knee contusion.
After the game, Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said X-rays were negative and that Manning is considered day-to-day.
After Manning’s exit, Tigers relievers Drew Hutchison, Derek Holland, Jose Ureña, Michael Fulmer and Gregory Soto combined to allow just two hits over six scoreless innings.
Up next: The Tigers are off on Thursday before opening a three-game series against the Tampa Bay Rays at Comerica Park on Friday at 7:10 p.m. Tigers lefty Matthew Boyd (3-8, 3.89 ERA) will start against Rays right-hander Michael Wacha (3-4, 5.54).
