Journalist reveals Celtic signing’s initial €10 million transfer value

Celtic did very well in the recently concluded summer transfer window, considering the circumstances. The Hoops managed to sign twelve players overall, with ten of them arriving on a permanent basis and two of them arriving on loan.

While there are still certain areas in the squad that the club could do with more depth in, they should be happy with the additions that they have made over the course of just one transfer window.

One of the most interesting signings that the Hoops managed to pull off this summer is that of Georgios Giakoumakis. The Greek striker finished as the top scorer of Eredivisie last season. But there are still some doubts surrounding him because of the fact that his goalscoring record before the 2020/21 campaign is not very impressive.

Celtic ultimately managed to sign him for a transfer fee believed to be around £2.5 million but Anthony Joseph has revealed that VVV-Venlo had initially been looking for a much higher figure before they were relegated from the Eredivisie. While speaking on The Celtic Exchange Podcast and as reported by 67 Hail Hail, the journalist said:

"“If I was to tell you, Celtic can sign the top scorer of the Eredivisie for less than £2.5 million, on paper, forget who it is, you’d be saying, yes get him.“And that’s what they’ve done. He was available for that price due to Venlo being relegated. Had they not been relegated, I was told they were looking for €10 million for him.”"

Is Giakoumakis a good signing for Celtic?

Like every other transfer, this one has a certain amount of uncertainty involved with it as well. At the end of the day, it is true that Giakoumakis’ record before joining VVV-Venlo last summer is not great.

But on the other hand, it is safe to say that he is coming off of a remarkable season in the Eredivisie and has shown that he can score consistently at a high level. Thus, it will be interesting to see whether his 2020/21 campaign was a matter of the striker finally finding himself or just a one-off.

If he can play the kind of football going forward that he played for VVV-Venlo last season, then the Hoops might have pulled off the signing of the summer. If he cannot, then there could be a serious worry about options up top for Postecoglou.
