Pirate senior Aidan Burkman plunged over the goal line for an early Pirate score.
The Grantsburg Pirates had a hard time containing a full force ground game from visiting Lakeland Conference rivals the Hurley North Stars on Friday, Sept. 3, who amassed nearly 500 yards of rushing against the Pirate defense in a 48-14 Hurley win.
Hurley’s offensive attack was almost entirely on the ground, as they attempted only three passes and completed just two of them in the win, while they racked up 59 rushing attempts in the victory.
Grantsburg was able to stay with the North Stars through much of the first half, and had several highlights of their own, including some impressive pass plays that resulted in scores.Â
But the second quarter became Hurley’s, as they scored three times on the ground and extended their lead into the second half, where the Pirates were able to fend off the North Star ground game for most of the third quarter, but succumbed to another gallop into for pay dirt as they extended their lead. The Pirates responded in kind and kept on pace, but the Hurley ground game was too much to tackle and they added another three scores in the final frame to secure the win, 48-14.
Notables for the Pirates included 13 of 22 attempts for quarterback Aaron Burkman, who threw for two scores and earned 206 yards in the air. Zach Miller and Trenton Johnson were on the receiving ends of Pirate touchdown passes, with Miller pulling in four receptions for 65 yards and Johnson adding three receptions for 79 yards. Jon Peltier, Keegan Hecht, Isaac Quimby and Aidan Burkman also had receptions in the loss.
Grantsburg falls to 1-2 overall, and 1-1 in Lakeland Conference play. They are on the road next week against Marshfield as a make-up game that was originally slated to be against Flambeau.Â
