Have we really seen the last of Regé-Jean Page on Bridgerton? Maybe not. While the Bridgerton fandom was devastated to learn that Page would not be appearing in season two of Netflix’s steamy regency romance, all hope may not be lost for a (brief) return from the heartthrob Duke of Hastings.

In a new interview with British GQ, Page teased a potential cameo in season 2. “I couldn’t possibly tell you!” Page initially said when asked if there were plans for him to return in any capacity. After some prodding, he eventually delivered a more cryptic answer: “Isn’t there something wonderful about being surprised by what you weren’t suspecting?” Netflix declined to comment.

But don’t get your hopes too high just yet. Page’s schedule is already quite full post-Bridgerton, as he’s set to star in two major projects—the Russo brothers’ spy thriller The Grey Man with Chris Evans, Chris Pine, Ryan Gosling, and Ana de Armas, and the forthcoming Dungeons & Dragons film adaptation. On top of that, he revealed to GQ that he’s left the Bridgerton WhatsApp group chat. “I respectfully exited,” he said. “I didn’t want to put them in an awkward situation where they had to kick me out.”

Bridgerton creator, executive producer, and showrunner Chris Van Dusen has also used the past tense to describe Page’s contributions to the show, telling V.F. that “it was such a privilege to work with Regé.” “He’s our duke and I think he’ll always be our duke,” he continued. “And I know that he’s about to continue charming the world in some really amazing ways. So I couldn’t be happier for him.” Still, in Shondaland, long-gone characters have a habit of popping up out of the blue. So time will tell if Page will grace season two of Bridgerton—which will follow Jonathan Bailey’s Lord Anthony and introduce Simone Ashley’s Kate Sharma—with his presence in some small way.
