Sunless tanning can be something of a risk; you can smudge it, stain your clothes, miss spots, and even turn an unpleasant shade of orange with certain formulas. Selena Gomez has experienced the extreme highs and lows of the art of the self-tan, and her embarrassing moment happened on a night where all eyes were on her: at the 2018 Met Gala.

Selena relayed the story in her latest beauty routine video for Vogue, saying that the 2018 Met Gala was a major self-tanning disaster. In the video, Selena gets ready for an evening out, doing her skin care routine and then applying lots of her Rare Beauty products for an elegant, glamorous look, and tells the story of the self-tan from hell.

"I want to tell you a little funny story about self-tanner," she shared in the video as she begins applying bronzer. "For the Met Gala I was getting ready and we wanted to add some color, so put on some of this tanning lotion and it looked really beautiful and very even."

However, the product they chose continued to develop throughout the night, as some formulas do." As the evening kept going on it was getting a little darker and darker, and I didn't notice it," Selena continued. "I'm at the Met Gala, one of the most prestigious, beautiful events, and I'm walking trying to look all beautiful and I look at a photo of myself when I sit down and I'm completely orange." Whoops! Of course, she was wearing a sheer white Coach gown too when it happened.

Selena shared that she was mortified by the whole situation and afraid of getting "eaten alive" by critics and made her security team make a video of herself running away from the camera to her car at the end of the evening.

Selena has talked about the mishap before. A few days after the Gala in question, she joked about it on Instagram, posting the aforementioned video of herself. "Me when I saw my pictures from the MET," she wrote at the time. Despite Sel's feeling about the self-tan, we thought (and still think!) Selena looked gorgeous at the event – and we can't help but feel a little bit comforted knowing that even the most famous celebrities on earth aren't immune to the ups and downs of self-tanner.
