The New York Yankees are trying to keep a hold of a Wild Card spot in the American League, but the red-hot Toronto Blue Jays are surging and are now just 2.5 games back after a 5-1 victory at Yankee Stadium on Tuesday night. Making matters even worse, Yankees ace Gerrit Cole suffered a hamstring injury in Tuesday's start and left the game after struggling through 3 2/3 innings.

No MRI is scheduled yet for Cole. The hard-throwing righty thinks he'll have a better grasp of the severity of the injury in the coming days.

“It’s tough to say right now,” he said. “I’m obviously disappointed with the outcome of today but I kind of want to reserve judgement until we see how this thing reacts the next 24-36 hours. I guess maybe for my own mentality I just want to make sure that I am good if I’m good, or if I need a few extra days, I need a few extra days.”

Cole took the loss to drop to 14-7 on the season with a terrific 2.78 ERA. It would obviously be a tough blow for the Yankees if he's forced to miss time during the stretch run.

As it stands right now, New York holds a half-game lead over the rival Boston Red Sox for the first Wild Card spot. The Blue Jays, winners of six straight, are two games behind Boston. The Seattle Mariners and Oakland Athletics are also lurking right behind Toronto, so this is shaping up to be a wild sprint to the finish line.

The Yankees would certainly love to have Gerrit Cole at full strength for this final push to the postseason. New York is crossing its fingers that this is actually nothing serious and that he'll be okay.
