The Alexandria boys and girls soccer teams have gotten off to very similar starts to the season with both teams not having given up a goal through a combined 7-0 record.

The Alexandria girls (3-0) dominated St. Cloud Apollo on Tuesday night with a 9-0 win. Junior Ella Westlund continues to put up huge numbers through three games. She scored six goals against the Eagles.

“We are pleased with a 3-0 record and three shutout wins,” head coach Tom Roos said. “However, we are not getting too high on ourselves. We realize that we have yet to see the toughest opponents on our schedule. That being said, the girls are doing everything right so far. That is our focus - doing things right day in and day out on practice days as well as game days.”

Outside midfielder Greta Oldenkamp was also in on a lot of the offense on Tuesday as she scored a goal and assisted on five. Allie Haabala and Elle Heydt each scored, and Sophia Korynta and Alexa Eggebraaten added an assist.

The Cardinals controlled the ball all night as they limited Apollo to just two shots on goal. Sophia Vinje turned aside both of those to get her third straight shutout behind a strong Cardinals’ defense.

Carlson’s goal is enough

The Alexandria boys’ defense anchored by senior goalkeeper Ryan Meuwissen has been equally as impressive as the girls’ so far.

Alexandria shut out St. Cloud Apollo in a 1-0 final on Tuesday where a Jack Carlson goal in the second half was enough to move to 4-0.

“The match was a great test to continue the momentum (we) have going into a difficult stretch of the season,” Alexandria head coach Brandon Johnson said. “Proving more to themselves, the team continues to see the depth of players both in their ability to work as a unit and play to each other's strengths. This was a solid match and a great section and conference win.”

In the 55th minute, Joaquim Ramos sent a crossing pass to Carlson, who finished for the game-winner. Johnson credited Holden Hansen as the player of the game for his effort all over the field in helping to hold the Eagles scoreless.

Alexandria now hosts a St. Cloud Tech program that has been one of the top teams in the Central Lakes Conference and Cardinals’ section in recent years. The Tigers come to town on Thursday night at 7 fresh off a 1-1 tie against Brainerd.
