Editor’s note: A previous version of this article stated that the cast for “Rigoletto” featured Javier Camarena, Rosa Feola, Luca Salsi (and this was reflected in the title of the article). However, the Royal Opera House has clarified that the production will be filmed with the September cast and broadcast in March. The article and its title have been changed to reflect this change.

The Royal Opera House has announced its first cinema season in 16 months.

For the purposes of this article, our focus will be solely on operatic performances.

The first opera of the season to be streamed in cinemas will be “Tosca.” The opera will star Elena Stikhina, Bryan Hymel, and Alexey Markov. The broadcast is set for Dec. 15, 2021, and will be followed by encore screenings on Jan. 19, 2022.

The company will also present an anniversary screening of “Rigoletto” on March 10, 2022, celebrating the 171st anniversary of the opera’s premiere in 1851. The production will star Carlos Álvarez, Liparit Avetisyan, Lisette Oropesa, Brindley Sherratt, Ramona Zaharia. There will be encore screenings on March 13, 2022.

Director Richard Eyre’s “La Traviata” will be the final opera to be screened in cinemas during the 2021-22 season. The showcase is set for April 13 with additional screenings on April 17, 2022. Pretty Yende, Stephen Costello, and Dmitri Platanias headline the opera.

“This season – the first full ROH program for two years – is quickly shaping up to be sensational, featuring some of the best-loved pieces in the repertory, performed by a dazzling cast of local and international stars. I’m delighted that audiences will once again be able to experience the magic of these productions wherever they are,” said Director of Opera Oliver Mears in an official press statement.
