Unclog your cowl ears, because Batman: The Audio Adventures is heading to HBO Max — and on Batman Day, of course.
Starring Jeffrey Wright (Westworld, The Batman‘s Jim Gordon) in the title role, Rosario Dawson (Marvel’s Luke Cage) as Catwoman, John Leguizamo (Bloodline) as the Riddler, and “a who’s who of incredible Saturday Night Live alums,” the scripted podcast serial is described as a “rollicking, over-the-top Batman adventure,” drawing inspiration from the spirited fun of the 1960s Batman TV series fronted by Adam West, the vintage noir atmosphere of Batman: The Animated Series, and the entire 80-plus year history of Batman.
All 10 episodes will land on HBO Max on the aforementioned Saturday, Sept. 18. It is believed a version of the title card below will be on screen as the audio-only podcast plays.
Written and directed by Emmy winner Dennis McNicholas (Saturday Night Live) and produced in partnership with Warner Bros. and DC, Batman: The Audio Adventures features performances — in undisclosed roles — by Chris Parnell, Melissa Villaseñor, Seth Meyers, Brent Spiner, Ike Barinholtz, Bobby Moynihan, Kenan Thompson, Jason Sudeikis, Alan Tudyk, Heidi Gardner, Brooke Shields, Paul Scheer, Tim Meadows, Fred Armisen and Ray Wise.
“Gotham City comes to lurid life in the theater of your mind with a sensational pageant of technicolor villainy unlike any other on Earth,” reads the synopsis. “Mafioso Penguins. Thieving Catwomen. Terrorizing Riddlers. Killing Jokers. A city where some problems can only be solved by a billionaire in a bat costume.”
Man, that’s a stacked cast. Can’t wait to hear how Jeffrey Wright sounds as Batman, but I imagine it’s going to be similar to the Watcher.
This is the first I’ve heard of this podcast being a comedy – and I love the idea! I bet Wright’s usually super serious voice will work well in a comedy. I am not sure TV is the best format for a podcast though.
Maybe if this is successful, and Joss Whedon becomes beloved once again, we could see some Firefly audio adventures too.
Considering what Ray Fisher, Gal Gadot, Charisma Carpenters, and several female writers on Buffy have said about Joss Whedon I’m not sure he deserves to be “beloved” again.
What on earth does this have to do with FIREFLY? I mean, you might as well say THE ADVENTURES OF BRISCO COUNTY, JR. (And actually….!)
Let it go.
That ship has sailed.
And crashed into the cold black sea of Whedon’s own crapulence.
Odd timing the choice of Wright as voice of Batman considering he will be Gordon in the next movie. He also narrates Marvel ‘s what if… who knew he was the next big comic book star?
Why is this being called a podcast? Podcasting is a distribution method, not a media type. Just being audio-only doesn’t make it a podcast.
Originally created as a podcast.
It sounds as if HBO wants to maintain a strict lockdown over all DC Comics projects, which is why it won’t allow this to be released as an actual podcast.
Having to stream a podcast over a TV channel in order to listen to it is just plain weird.
Alan Tudyk as Joker and Clayface? *fingers crossed*
