Grey's Anatomy brings back another familiar face for season 18

Grey's Anatomy is bringing back another character for the upcoming season, premiering later this month.

ABC's long-running medical drama has already confirmed Meredith Grey's late mother Ellis, played by Kate Burton, will come back for "multiple episodes". Moreover, The Umbrella Academy star Kate Walsh has taken to Instagram to announce she will return to Grey's as Dr Addison Montgomery.

But that is not all. Abigail Spencer, last seen as Dr Owen Hunt's (Kevin McKidd) younger sister Megan in season 15, is set to reprise her role in the new chapter.

According to Deadline, Spencer will arrive in the premiere of Season 18, after having appeared in six total episodes of the series. Fans last saw trauma surgeon Megan in season 15 in 2019, when she moved to Los Angeles with her partner Nathan Riggs, played by Martin Henderson.

Spencer is a frequent collaborator of Grey's Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernoff. They've worked together on six projects, most recently recurred on her short-lived ABC drama Rebel. They've also teamed up on Grey's Anatomy spin-off Private Practice, ABC pilots Grace and Introducing Lennie Rose, as well as the 2015 short Stars.

As for Walsh, it's unknown exactly when her character Dr Montgomery will be back in Seattle for the new season. Variety reported it will be for a "multi-episode" arc, but details of her storyline haven't been disclosed yet.

Walsh's Addison was promoted from recurring character to series regular in the early days of Grey's. After the third season of the show, creat0r Shonda Rhimes sent Addison to Los Angeles, where Walsh starred on spin-off Private Practice, which aired for six seasons on ABC.

Grey's Anatomy season 17 airs on ABC in the US and Sky Witness in the UK, with selected episodes also available on NOW. Seasons 1-16 are streaming on Disney+.
