The Saginaw area is filled with outstanding fall athletes, but not all play football.

And they have wasted little time putting up some impressive performances to start the 2021 fall season.

MLive will highlight some of the top athletes in the Saginaw area – as nominated by their coaches. But it’s up to the fans to pick the MLive Saginaw Athlete of the Week.

Fans can vote through 6 p.m. Monday.

Kayla Baase, Swan Valley volleyball

Kayla Baase is in her third season on the Swan Valley varsity and second as a captain. She leads the Vikings with 39 aces, 85 kills, 97 digs and five blocks. Baase, who also plays basketball and softball, owns a 3.97 GPA and is dual enrolled at Delta College.

Isabella Curry, Hemlock cross country

Isabella Curry is only a freshman, but she has made an early mark on the Hemlock cross country team. Curry, the team’s No. 1 runner, finished eighth – second freshman overall – at the Hemlock Classic and second at the Bay City John Glenn Bobcat Invitational. She was 13th at the Ithaca Yellowjacket Invitational with a season-best time of 23:31.

Whitney Farrell, Freeland cross country

Freeland is currently ranked fourth in the state in Division 2, with Whitney Farrell leading the Falcons to a pair of victories. She finished second at St. Johns (19:25) and second at Chippewa Hills (19:56).

Korah Honig, St. Louis volleyball

Korah Honig, a four-year varsity player for St. Louis, has helped lead the Sharks to a 5-0-1 record. In six games, Honig has 64 kills, 30 digs, 7 aces and 4 blocks.

Bryce Husen, Birch Run cross country

Bryce Husen finished 14th out of 209 runners at the Birch Run Early Invite in 18:33. He followed with a fourth-place finish at the Brown City Invite in 18:21, leading the Panthers to first place.

Summer Luick, Midland Dow volleyball

Dow has played just one match this season against Lake Fenton, but in the one match Summer Luick had 12 blocks, 7 kills and 2 aces.

Kendall Morris, Frankenmuth soccer

Kendall Morris, a junior, broke a Frankenmuth soccer record for most goals in a game in a win over Birch Run. Morris scored six goals in the game, adding an assist to total seven points in the win.

Sydney Prime, Heritage volleyball

Heritage is 6-0 behind Sydney Prime, who leads the team in kills with 34 and a .293 kill percentage. She is serving at 86 percent this season and is second on the team in digs with 29.

Averie Pumford, Freeland golf

Averie Pumford already owns one medalist honor in her freshman season at Freeland, shooting a 77 at Currie West to win the Frank Altimore Invite. She also finished sixth at the Lober Classic two-day event at Crystal Mountain, shooting an 84 at Mountain Ridge and a 78 at Betsy Valley. She followed with an 80 at Bay County Golf Course and currently sits in first place in Tri-Valley Conference play.

Evelynn Rybicki, Freeland volleyball

Evelynn Rybicki, a junior, led Freeland in the Bay City Western Invite. Rybicki, a setter, finished with 37 assists, 10 kills and 8 aces.

Mason Sumner, Breckenridge cross country

Mason Sumner, who has been among the Division 4 cross country elite for the past two seasons, is not letting up this season. He is 2-0, taking first at the Webberville Happy Acres Invitational (16:06) and first in the Saranac Invitational (16:05).

Jack Wolohan, Midland Dow soccer

Midland Dow is off to a 4-0 start behind Jack Wolohan, a senor midfielder. Wolohan, who was an all-conference player as a junior, has 11 goals and three assists while also helping lead a defense that has allowed just one goal and four shots on goal in four games. Wolohan also stars on the Dow hockey team.

Jacob Wurtzel, Freeland cross country

The Freeland boys cross country team is ranked third in the state after a second-place finish at St. Johns and a championship at Chippewa Hills. Jacob Wurtzel finished eighth at St. Johns with a PR time of 16:23. Wurtzel added a third-place finish at Chippewa Hills.
