"When you go out in the community you wouldn’t know we are having a health crisis," Dr. John Mann, of Novant Health, said. "But when you go in the doors of any of our hospitals it’s readily apparent we are having a health crisis.”
Doctors from Novant, Cone and Atrium Health at Wake Forest Baptist say a combined 754 COVID-19 patients are currently being hospitalized and 685 of those patients are unvaccinated.
"When we see all these unvaccinated people in our hospital, over 90% unvaccinated, it really tugs on our heart because it’s preventable," Dr. Christopher Ohl, of Atrium Health at Wake Forest Baptist, said. "It’s a preventable hospitalization.”
All three hospitals said their emergency departments are busy and their staffs are fatigued.
"We have had an influx of a lot of patients in our emergency rooms and we do have to have carefully orchestrate to ensure we’re admitting as many patients as we possibly can," Cone Health's Dr. Cynthia Snider said.
The doctors fear the labor day holiday could add to the growing covid case counts. But as of right now, they have been able to give a bed to any patient that needs one.
"Sometimes that may not be in the hospital they presented in," Mann said. "We’ve had to transfer patients between all of our hospitals to absorb the volume.”
The doctors said the best way to protect yourself and others is to get vaccinated. If you're still looking for a vaccine, click here to find a location and time where one is available.
