Colorado Rockies game no. 139 thread: Logan Webb vs. Chi Chi González

The Rockies will look to Chi Chi González to put a stop to the home run derby show the Braves and then Giants displayed on Sunday and Monday, respectively, combining for seven homers off starters Ryan Feltner and Kyle Freeland and eight total of all Rockies pitchers. The Rockies have given up 19 runs in their last two games, while just scoring seven in the same time frame. On the bright side, the Rockies have hit three homers of their own (Garrett Hampson, Ryan McMahon, and Trevor Story), which all came on Monday.

González , who’s yo-yoed from starter to bullpen all season, will make his second straight start in the rotation in place of Jon Gray, who is set to return to the Rockies lineup on Wednesday. González, who’s likely to stay in the rotation for the remainder of the season with Austin Gomber going on the 60-day IL, last pitched on Thursday against the Braves, giving up three runs on four hits with four walks in 3 2/3 innings in the 6-5 loss. The Rockies have used seven different relievers from the bullpen in the last two games, accounting for 11 innings, and they could use a longer appearance from González, especially since the Rockies are on game 12 of 17 over a 17-day stretch.

González pitched against the Giants twice in April, combining to give up four runs on 11 hits, including one homer, over 10 innings in both appearances with two no decisions with the Rockies going 1-1.

The Rockies will face Logan Webb (8-3, 2.56 ERA), who has gotten better and better as the season has progressed. In his last three starts, he’s pitched 20 innings (two seven-inning appearances and one six-inning appearance) and given up two earned runs on 14 hits with three walks and 23 strikeouts. He’s also faced the Rockies three times already this season and he helped the Giants win two of their matchups.

In the first game, on April 10, he got a no decision in a 4-3 loss after giving up three runs on eight hits, including a homer by Ryan McMahon, in five innings. On May 5, the Rockies scored six runs on Webb on three hits and three walks in 3 2/3 innings on their way to a 6-5 win. Most recently, Webb shut down the Rockies on Aug. 12 when he threw six scoreless innings with three hits and eight strikeouts en route to a 7-0 win.
