ORCHARD LAKE – The Broncos bagged a big one.

The No. 1 senior boys basketball in Oakland County, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s shooting guard Javaughn Hannah, committed to Western Michigan last week, providing the Broncos high-major talent at the mid-major level.

The 6-foot-4 Hannah is a borderline 4-star prospect who had offers from Iowa, Texas A&M, Marquette, DePaul, Washington State, Ole Miss and Rhode Island, and just landed at St. Mary’s back in the summer.

Hannah fired in 26 points per night as a sophomore at Mt. Clemens in 2019-20. That season, he scored 60 points in a single game.

As a junior last winter, Hannah played on the prep school circuit alongside phenom Emoni Bates (Memphis) at Ypsilanti Prep Academy.

St. Mary’s has been the No. 1 team in the state the past two years during the regular season. Hannah’s addition to the Eaglets roster assures the program that it won’t be losing any steam offensively for 2022, with Hannah replacing 2021 Mr. Basketball candidate Julian Roper (Northwestern) in the St. Mary’s lineup.

St. Mary’s head coach Todd Covert thinks Western Michigan got a steal.

“Javaughn is giving Western Michigan tremendous value as a recruit, but he’s going to be able to make an impact right away in Kalamazoo,” Covert said. “That was a big factor. He could have gone to a high major, but this might be a much better situation for him.”

Covert likes Hannah’s game.

“He’s a strong finisher, just a true competitor and tough as nails,” Covert said.

Teaming him with Eaglets senior point guard Kareem Rozier, the top pure point guard in the state, will once again give St. Mary’s the top backcourt in the area. Trey McKenney, the No. 1 freshman in the state, comes to the school from Genesee County and will be an immediate presence at a wing guard spot.
