Hall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez spoke exclusively with FanSided on Tuesday, and pondered what his numbers would have been playing with Patrick Mahomes.

A Hall of Fame tight end playing with Patrick Mahomes? Can you imagine?

Of course you can, because the Kansas City Chiefs are currently pairing Travis Kelce with Mahomes. However, before Kelce was another immortal at the position in Tony Gonzalez, who racked up a record number of catches (1,325), yardage (15,127) and touchdowns (111) for tight ends.

When asked about what he could have done if he’d played with Mahomes during his peak, Gonzalez marveled.

“At my peak? At my peak I think I would have been up there at 1,300 yards,” Gonzalez said. “The stuff Travis (Kelce) is doing, 1,300 or 1,400 yards. They can’t touch you anymore, they can’t hit you. Before they used to aim at your head, before they used to jump on your back like a Capuchin spider monkey down the field. Now they can’t even touch you, so I think I would have put up some pretty nice numbers, those 13 or 15 touchdowns and 1,300 yards.”

For his career, Gonzalez played 17 seasons including 12 with the Chiefs and the final five with the Atlanta Falcons. He reached 14 Pro Bowls and was a six-time First-Team All-Pro including his penultimate season of 2012. Surprisingly, Gonzalez only had four 1,000-yard seasons, while Kelce has strung five consecutive together entering the 2021 campaign.
