Metallica ‘Black Album’ anniversary tops this week’s new music releases

"The Metallica Blacklist" features specially recorded new versions of "Metallica" songs by more than 50 artists. (Rhino/Blackened Recordings)

A revisit to one of the biggest albums of all time -- “Metallica” (aka “The Black Album”) leads a big week of new music releases, with titles from Kacey Musgraves, Pat Metheny, Elvis Costello, Common and Diana Ross’ first new album in 15 years also on the docket (all subject to change)...

Album of the Week: The 30th anniversary of Metallica’s landmark, 16-times platinum “Metallica” (aka “The Black Album”) is being celebrated in fine fashion this week. The album itself is being reissued in several expanded editions, including unreleased studio tracks and a wealth of live material from the period (from Rhino/Blackened Recordings). Even better, perhaps, is “The Metallica Blacklist” (Rhino/Blackened Recordings) that features specially recorded new versions of “Metallica” songs by more than 50 artists -- benefitting 52 charities -- ranging from likely suspects such as Ghost, Corey Taylor, Volbeat and the HU to jaw-dropping surprises like J Balvin, Kamasi Washington and a supergroup of Miley Cyrus, Elton John, Yo-Yo Ma, Chad Smith, Watt and Metallica’s own Robert Trujillo.

Did Ya Know?: “Spanish Model” (UMe) is a radical reimagining of Elvis Costello’s second album, “This Year’s Model” from 1977, with new vocals, all in Spanish, by the likes of Juanes, Luis Fonsi, Draco Rosa, Cami and more.
