The Tennessee Titans acquired star wide receiver Julio Jone from the Atlanta Falcons in the offseason. The Titans have now made another key decision involving Jones that could impact his future.
ESPN's Field Yates reports Tennessee converted $14 million of Jones' $15.3 million base salary into a signing bonus to create over $11 million in cap space. They also added two void years to the deal. The wide receiver's contract runs through the 2023 season and includes a base salary of about $11.5 million in each of the next two seasons.
PFT's Josh Alper notes that Jones' current contract situation could mean the 32-year-old will be looking for one last big payday:
Those salaries make it a good bet that we’ll be hearing more about Jones’ contract if he has a good first year with the AFC South team. The contract numbers for wideouts have gone well above those figures and the 32-year-old Jones probably isn’t going to wait until his deal is up to look for one more big payday.
While Julio Jones had a down year in 2020 due to injuries, he's not far removed from being one of the most productive receivers in the NFL. He led the league in receiving yards with 1,677 in 2018 and had 1,394 yards in 2019. The 2020 season broke a streak of six consecutive Pro Bowls.
Now with the Titans, Jones will be lining up opposite star wide receiver A.J. Brown. With Derrick Henry in the backfield, Ryan Tannehill has one of the best weapons groups at his disposal in the entire NFL.
As long as Jones stay healthy, he should be back to putting up big numbers. If he does that, he'll likely look to cash in.
