Police: Family friend led deputies to missing young Florida mother's body
Officials have released new information in the case of a missing Florida mother who was found dead.
Perrin Damron, 23, was found in the canal in Indiantown on Sunday.
According to Martin County Sheriff's Office, Damron left her home voluntarily with a family friend, Eric William Westergard, of Jupiter, on Saturday. Her vehicle and all of her belongings were still at her home.
A friend of Damron reported her missing on Saturday night. The friend told deputies Damron's child's father picked up the child on Friday evening at Damron's house. According to the sheriff's office, Damron was supposed to meet her child's father on Saturday, but that meeting did not take place.
Family members told investigators that Damron met with Westergard on Saturday.
"We were very suspicious of him. There was never a point where we were able to eliminate him from suspicion and the suspicion grew as the case continued," said Martin County Sheriff William Snyder.
Detectives interviewed Westergard and went to his Jupiter Farms home as part of the investigation.
"The suspect made incriminating statements," Snyder told WPTV. "There was some physical evidence found at the house and ultimately the suspect led us to the overpass."
He said Westergard led detectives to an overpass at the Okeechobee Waterway along State Road 710 near Indiantown, where Damron's body was found.
Westergard, a Jupiter Farms resident, remained in the main Palm Beach County jail Monday night. He faces a charge of first-degree murder.
"I am always profoundly sad when someone loses their life in violence," Snyder said. “This case obviously did not end like we wanted it to. We hoped from the beginning that we would find her. I was thinking about that this morning and I was thinking about her child and a mother is gone and that child will never know her mother and there are a lot of victims in this."
