Here’s something you don’t see every day: a batter getting ejected while crossing home plate after hitting a home run.
But that appears to be what happened to New Jersey native Anthony Volpe, who is the New York Yankees’ top-rated prospect.

Here’s what went down Sunday, according to For The Win:
During the fourth inning of the High-A Hudson Valley Renegades’ game against the Greensboro Grasshoppers, Volpe extended Hudson Valley’s lead with an opposite-field, 3-run home run. But keep an eye on the umpire as Volpe crossed home plate. With zero hesitation, home plate umpire Tyler Witte ejected Volpe for something he said while rounding third. It’s unclear what Volpe said — or what he was upset about given that the calls went his way during the at-bat — but Witte had an active game tossing players. Left fielder Elijah Dunham was ejected by Witte an inning earlier after a groundout.
Adding to the insanity of Sunday’s game, Hudson Valley scored 14 runs in the ninth inning. You read that right: 14 runs, including a pair of grand slams, as Hudson Valley won, 23-4.
In 43 games this year with Hudson Valley, Volpe is hitting .286 with 12 home runs and 31 RBI.
In MLB Pipeline’s midseason rankings, the 20-year-old shortstop replaced outfielder Jasson Dominguez as the Yankees’ No. 1 prospect.
