UPDATE 6:39 a.m. (9/7/21): Virginia State Police announced Tuesday morning the identity of the driver who died after a large truck overturned Monday afternoon in Bedford County.

Police say the single-vehicle crash occurred shortly before 5 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 6 along Route 122, at the intersection with Hurricane Reef Drive.

According to authorities, a 2020 International MV6 was heading south on Route 122 when it ran off the right side of the road, lost control, and overturned.

The driver of the truck — identified by Virginia State Police as 72-year-old Clark Todd Scully Jr. of Big Island — was not wearing his seatbelt and died at the scene of the crash.

The investigation into this fatal crash is reportedly still ongoing.


BEDFORD COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Fire officials say one person is dead after a moving truck overturned on a road in Bedford County Monday afternoon.

According to the Bedford Fire Department, units were dispatched at approximately 4:40 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 6 for an overturned vehicle with at least one person injured at the intersection of Big Island Highway and Hurricane Reef Drive.

When crews arrived at the scene, they found an overturned box truck — blocking the entire road — with the occupant trapped inside the truck.

However, fire officials say the driver died from his injuries.

After helping Virginia State Police with removing the driver from the moving truck, the department says units returned to service.
