Former Alabama tight end rejoins Miami Dolphins on practice squad

One week ago, the Miami Dolphins waived Carl Tucker. On Monday, the NFL team got the Alabama alumnus back by signing him to its practice squad.

Players on the practice squad practice with their teams, but they are not eligible to play in games – with two exceptions.

Each team is allowed to elevate two players from its 16-member practice squad to its active roster for every game, although no player can be elevated more than twice during the season. After the game, the elevated players revert to their practice-squad status without having to pass through waivers.

After catching 36 passes in 38 games at North Carolina, Carl Tucker came to Alabama as a graduate transfer last year in hopes of improving his chances of reaching the NFL. Even though the tight end didn’t catch a pass for the Crimson Tide, Miami signed Tucker as a rookie free agent after the 2021 NFL Draft.

The Dolphins put Tucker on its roster as a fullback. Even through he was as the only player on the team with that designation, Miami waived Tucker on Aug. 30.

The Dolphins have four tight ends on their active roster – and it would be five if Adam Shaheen had not been placed on reserve/COVID-19 on Monday. But Tucker is again the only fullback on Miami’s roster, albeit on the practice squad.

While Tucker rejoined an NFL roster on Monday, another player with one season at Alabama left one when the Las Vegas Raiders waived running back BJ Emmons.

Emmons ran for 90 yards and one touchdown on 24 carries and caught a 10-yard pass in Las Vegas’ three preseason games. After clearing waivers when he was released in the cut to the regular-season limit of 53 players last week, Emmons rejoined the Raiders on their practice squad.

In 2016, Emmons ran for 173 yards and one touchdown on 35 carries before a foot injury in the eighth game ended his freshman season at Alabama. Emmons left Alabama after his freshman season for Hutchinson Community College. Emmons did not play in the 2018 season before joining Florida Atlantic in 2019. He entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie this year.

Emmons became the second former Alabama player released after signing a practice-squad contract last week. The Tennessee Titans waived Miller Forristall on Friday two days after he’d joined their practice squad.

Former Crimson Tide players now on NFL practice squads include:

· Cornerback Tony Brown, Cincinnati Bengals

· Safety Shyheim Carter, Houston Texans

· Guard Lester Cotton, Las Vegas Raiders

· Wide receiver Gehrig Dieter, Kansas City Chiefs

· Running back Derrick Gore, Kansas City Chiefs

· Safety Jared Mayden, San Francisco 49ers

· Outside linebacker Christian Miller, Pittsburgh Steelers

· Center Ross Pierschbacher, Philadelphia Eagles

· Offensive tackle Andre Smith, Baltimore Ravens

· Fullback Carl Tucker, Miami Dolphins
