One of the most exciting and interesting signings that Celtic made this summer is that of Jota on a season-long loan from Benfica with an option to buy included in the deal. And it is safe to say that most fans don’t know what to expect from the Portuguese winger.

Jota was a standout for both club and country while coming through the youth ranks and it was just a few years ago that he was being heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid. It is safe to say that things have not quite gone as most people would have expected for the youngster.

After failing to nail down a spot in Benfica’s first-team, he spent the previous season on loan at Real Valladolid, but could not establish himself as a regular starter there either.

Now, he finds himself at Parkhead. As reported by Record (via 67 Hail Hail), the option to buy is believed to be around €7.5 million (£6.4 million) although he has a massive €88 million (£75.5 million) release clause in his contract.

Can Jota find his feet at Celtic?

Jota’s release clause just goes to show how highly he was rated while coming through the youth ranks. He has not quite managed to find his feet at the senior level though.

The talent has never been in question when it comes to Jota. He is a brilliant dribbler of the ball and very comfortable with taking his man on. He also showed at the youth level that he has an eye for goal.

What is perhaps most interesting about his time with Benfica is that he has not gotten a lot of chances in the first-team. According to stats from Transfermarkt, he has made 34 appearances for the club which have combined for 685 minutes of football, and he has scored 2 goals and provided 3 assists for them.

That is a goal contribution every 137 minutes, which is quite impressive. Now, it will be interesting to see whether Jota receives significant playing time under the management of Ange Postecoglou at Celtic.
