First look: San Francisco 49ers at Detroit Lions, Goff and Campbell make Detroit debuts

The Detroit Lions host the San Francisco 49ers Sunday for their regular-season openers at Ford Field. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the 49ers vs. Lions odds and lines; check back for our NFL picks and predictions.

San Francisco hopes to bounce back from an injury-plagued 2020 in head coach Kyle Shanahan's fifth year on the job. They're two years removed from losing in Super Bowl LIV to the Kansas City Chiefs

Shanahan is 29-35 overall since taking over the 49ers in 2017. But, San Francisco had the most adjusted games lost due to injury in 2020 (according to Football Outsiders).

The 49ers moved up in the 2021 NFL Draft to take QB Trey Lance with the No. 3 overall pick by trading their No. 12 overall pick and future draft picks for the Miami Dolphins' first-rounder.

This will be Detroit's first season in the post-Matthew Stafford era, who the Lions selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. Stafford had a 74-90-1 overall record in 11 seasons in Detroit with one Pro Bowl selection (2014) and three postseason berths (0-3 in the playoffs). Stafford was traded this offseason to the Los Angeles Rams for QB Jared Goff, two future first-round draft picks and a third-round compensatory pick.

Also, making his Lions debut Sunday is new head coach Dan Campbell who takes over for Matt Patricia. Detroit failed to make the postseason in all three of Patricia's seasons at the helm (2018-20) and had a 14-33-1 overall record. Campbell comes over from the New Orleans Saints, where he served as an assistant head coach and tight ends coach from 2016-20.

49ers at Lions head-to-head

Week 2 in 2018 is the last time these teams have met and San Francisco beat Detroit 30-27 but failed to cover as 6-point road favorites. 49ers QB Jimmy Garoppolo completed 18-of-26 passes for 206 yards, 2 TD and 0 INT with a 118.4 QB Rating.

However, San Francisco has added several new weapons around Garoppolo since then, and obviously, Detroit's roster has been completely overhauled.

Goff has plenty of experience with San Francisco while playing in the NFC West from 2016-20. Goff is 3-5 vs. the 49ers in his career with a 59.8% completion rate, 14 TD to 6 INT and an 88.2 QB Rating.
