BOSTON — The Boston Red Sox have signed shortstop José Iglesias to a major league contract. They also activated him for Monday’s game against the Rays here at Fenway Park.
The Red Sox made several roster moves Monday. They optioned infielder Jack López and pitchers Kutter Crawford and John Schreiber to Triple-A Worcester.
They also selected right-handed pitcher Michael Feliz to the major league roster and activated Josh Taylor from the COVID-related IL.
The Red Sox needed to add depth at shortstop with Xander Bogaerts and Christian Arroyo both on the COVID-related IL. The Angels released the 31-year-old Iglesias on Sept. 3.
Iglesias batted .259 with a .295 on-base percentage, .375 slugging percentage, .670 OPS, eight homers, 23 doubles, one triple and 41 RBIs in 114 games (447 plate appearances) for the Angels this year.
Known for being a slick defender at shortstop, Iglesias’ defensive metrics have tailed off this year. He’s worst in Defensive Runs Saved (negative-21) among all major league fielders.
Iglesias initially signed with Boston as an international amateur free agent in September 2009. He came up through the Red Sox’s farm system and played 98 games for Boston from 2011 until being traded at the 2013 deadline to Detroit for Jake Peavy.
