The Russo Brothers may be severing their ties to the Marvel Cinematic Universe for good, following the ongoing Black Widow lawsuit between Disney and Scarlett Johansson.

Anthony and Joseph Russo made their MCU debut with 2014's Captain America: The Winter Soldier, before going on to direct Civil War, Infinity War, and Endgame. Whether or not the pair would return to the MCU after wrapping up the massive finale that was Endgame has been something fans have been wondering, but it's now looking more likely that they will not.

In case you missed the news earlier this summer, Johansson is suing Disney over an alleged breach of contract in regards to her recently released solo movie. The actor claims that releasing the film on Disney Plus at the same time as it hit theatres cost her millions of dollars in backend compensation. This is because certain of her bonuses are conditional on hitting box office targets that Black Widow now probably won't achieve as a result of being on the streaming service.

"Disney intentionally induced Marvel's breach of the agreement, without justification, in order to prevent Ms. Johansson from realizing the full benefit of her bargain with Marvel," the suit reads.

The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that this lawsuit has the Russo Brothers concerned, and has impacted talks between the directing duo and Disney to produce future films in the MCU together. Apparently negotiations have "hit an impasse", as the Russos are now wondering how any potential new Marvel movie from them would be released - and how they would be paid for it.

It's unclear what Marvel project the Russos might have been in talks to direct, but the pair have made no secret about wanting to do a Secret Wars-style team-up movie in the past. Assuming such an adaptation is in the works, we might have to accept the fact the Endgame directors won't be involved with it.
