The Clippers have waived Yogi Ferrell

The Clippers announced Sunday that they waived Yogi Ferrell. They had until Jan. 10 to guarantee his deal, but elected to move on from Ferrell before the start of the season.

The team now has 15 players on guaranteed contracts, including Jay Scrubb’s two-way deal. They have reportedly extended a training camp invite to George King as well. That means the Clippers can sign four more players to training camp deals, and one of them could make the final roster. The Clippers could also leave the roster spot open, or sign another player to a non-guaranteed deal for some flexibility during the season.

Ferrell was signed as point guard insurance last April because of the questionable health statuses of both Patrick Beverley and Rajon Rondo. He never really graduated beyond a break glass in case of emergency type of player, though he did help deliver the Clippers a win against Memphis on April 21. With the more durable Eric Bledsoe on the roster for the upcoming season, along with point guard depth in the form of Luke Kennard, Reggie Jackson, and Jason Preston, there wasn’t much need for Ferrell, especially considering the Clippers give their wings a lot of ball-handling responsibilities.

The Clippers may also have made this move to address some roster imbalances. They only have two centers and three power forwards, most of whom had injury issues as recently as last season. The team could probably use another center for depth purposes, and they can now sign such a player with the roster spot created by waiving Ferrell.
