POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – The UConn women's cross country team opened the season with a first place team finish at the Marist Invitational on Saturday morning. The team finished the 5k race with a time of 1:34.35.
Eight Huskies finished in the top 25, with six of those finishing in the top 15 and four finishing in the top ten. Freshman Monica Strain (Castleton, NY) was the top finisher for Huskies, coming in second in the individual 5k race with a time of 18:26.7 and an average mile time of 5:56.2. Sophomore Rachel Woodruff (Saranac, NY) finished fourth overall, with a time total time of 18:49.6 and an average mile time of 6:03.6. Freshman Madison Relyea (Mayfield, NY) placed seventh overall, with a mile time of 6:07.9 and a total time of 19:03.2. Junior Caroline Webb (Greenwich, Conn.) finished just behind Relyea in eighth place, finishing with a time of 19:04.8 and a mile time of 6:08.4.
Senior Emma Krebs placed 11th overall, coming in at 19:11.2, with a mile time of 6:10.5. Fellow senior Alyssa Kraus came in just behind Krebs, finishing 12th with a time of 19:12.2 and a 6:10.8 average mile time. Graduate student Kate Romanchick placed 17th, finishing at 19:33.0 with a 6:17.5 average mile time. Rounding out the Huskies' finishers was freshman Danielle Adams (East Hampton, Conn.) who finished 22nd overall, coming in at 19:52.5, with an average mile of 6:23.8.
"Today was a great way to open up the season. We ran smart and stayed controlled the first half of the race and moved up well and won," said head cross country coach Lindsay Crevoiserat.
"I'm looking forward to adding the other seven [runners] to the mix and seeing what this group can do this weekend, and the rest of the season. I'm very happy with where we are, and I think there is a lot more to come from the whole squad."

The Huskies travel to Amherst, Massachusetts next weekend for the UMass Minuteman Invitational. The race is scheduled for Saturday, September 11th, start time TBA.
