The Baltimore Orioles are not showing any signs of coming out of their rebuilding process. The rotation, aside from John Means, has been an utter disaster. There are a couple of building blocks in the lineup, but not enough to lead anyone to think that the Orioles will have a viable offense any time soon.

While there are several prospects on the cusp of reaching the majors, that will not be enough. The Orioles need to lock in those players already on the roster who can be a part of the future. Trey Mancini should be a part of that core.

Baltimore Orioles should extend Trey Mancini

Mancini has been an inspirational story unlike many others. He had missed the entire 2020 season due to Stage 3 colon cancer, with his life, let alone his career, being in doubt. However, while he has not been the player he was in 2019, he has come back in impressive fashion, even reaching the finals of the Home Run Derby.

Even if he has not been that same player, Mancini’s production has been impressive considering what he went through. He has produced a solid .258/.319/.451 batting line in his 533 plate appearances, hitting 21 homers and 29 doubles. He has been an important part of the Orioles lineup, one of the few players to produce an OPS+ above 100 this year.

But Mancini is more than his numbers. He has become an inspirational leader in the clubhouse, someone that the younger players can look at and know that their effort matters. What Mancini has dealt with makes those losses and struggles pale in comparison.

It is also entirely possible that Mancini returns to being the player he was in 2019. He was a burgeoning star before dealing with cancer and is still working his way back and finding his strength. He can be that middle of the order bat that the Orioles need, both in the present and future.
