AKRON, Ohio — An Akron artist and Kent State student created a mural of Lebron James and The Looney Tunes that was defaced shortly thereafter.

Now she is back with her brushes to fix it.

What You Need To Know

  • Chardae Slater painted a mural of Lebron James and The Looney Tunes

  • Someone defaced it

  • The community raised $300 to help cover costs to fix it

Chardae Slater painted her first mural on the side of a shop on West Market Street earlier this summer.

It was not far from the school where fellow Akron native LeBron James became a star and founded his own school.

It shows James and the cartoon cast of the movie remake he's starring in: "Space Jam: A New Legacy."

“I felt accomplished. I felt proud of myself. It’s my first mural, you know. I didn’t even know that it would turn out like this.”

She said she didn't expect someone to deface her work and attempt to disrespect a local hero by spray painting "LA Flop" and a clown nose on it.

“Of course I was upset but you kind of have to be prepared for those things in the art world. It’s my first mural like I said, and if I would’ve known I would’ve done the anti-graffiti coating over it.”

When pictures of the damage came out, people in the community responded.

Slater received $300 to make repairs.

“They should have messed up the whole thing. I can fix this," she joked.

Her work even garnered the attention of her muse . . . Lebron James himself.

“He saw, he reposted it on his Facebook and he sent his mom, Gloria, to meet with me and we’re working on some things.”

When she is finished fixing this mural, she’ll be working with the Lebron James Foundation to create another mural together.

For Chardae, this is proof that a little bit of paint can go a long way.

“I hope people get inspired to do what they love to do and just keep going; never stop, never give up.”
