Saturday’s qualifying session at Circuit Zandvoort set the starting lineup for Sunday’s Dutch Grand Prix, the 13th race of the 2021 Formula 1 season.

The first Formula 1 Dutch Grand Prix since 1985 is set to begin with the hometown hero on the pole following Saturday’s qualifying session.

The homecoming for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen came one year later than initially planned as a result of COVID-19-related restrictions, but he brought an electric crowd to their feet with an amazing lap.

Who took pole at Zandvoort?

Verstappen took the pole position for this 72-lap race around the 14-turn, 2.642-mile (4.252-kilometer) Circuit Zandvoort road course in Zandvoort, Netherlands by recording a top lap time of 68.885 seconds (138.074 miles per hour) in the third and final round of qualifying for the race.

More from Formula One

Set to start alongside Verstappen on the front row in second place is championship rival and points leader Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes, whose top lap time in the third and final round of qualifying for the race was 68.923 seconds (137.997 miles per hour), just 0.038 seconds (0.077 miles per hour) slower than that of Verstappen.

While Hamilton’s teammate, Valtteri Bottas, qualified in third place, Verstappen’s teammate, Sergio Perez, was unable to advance out of the opening round of qualifying and is set to start all the way back in 16th, which could put Red Bull at a competitive disadvantage strategy-wise despite the fact that Verstappen is set to start from the pole position.

Zandvoort betting prediction

If this race is like any other race in the 2021 season, it is going to come down to Verstappen and Hamilton, barring some unforeseen catastrophe. Considering the fact that the most recent race (excluding the Belgian Grand Prix “race”) featured a catastrophe, it’s unlike that we’ll see anybody other than these two standing atop the podium on Sunday.

Verstappen is certainly the man to beat, but any time Hamilton is listed as low as +200, you need to take notice. Considering how hard it is to pass at Circuit Zandvoort, it may be smart to put money on both and adjust the amounts to ensure you make money as long as one of them wins; their odds allow for such a strategy (see here).

As for longshots, Pierre Gasly is a nice option at +2500. He is set to start in fourth place behind the perennial top three, and in the off chance we do see conflict involving both Hamilton and Verstappen, Gasly has proven in the past that he can take full advantage.
