Dodgers: Clayton Kershaw’s Return to the Rotation Outlined by Dave Roberts

The trade deadline has long passed but the Dodgers are the only team in a position to add a three-time Cy Young award winner to their rotation heading toward the postseason. LA ace Clayton Kershaw has made strides in his return from an elbow issue that has kept him sidelined since early July. Moreover, the left-hander threw to hitters in a simulated game in San Francisco on Friday.

Dave Roberts was satisfied enough with the results of the session to outline a path to a return for the future Hall of Famer.

“The next step for Clayton will be to throw a ‘pen on Sunday. Once he gets through that, we’ll figure out where he goes on a rehab assignment, which would be either Tuesday or Wednesday of next week. After he gets through that — we would assume healthy and all goes well — then the next outing will be with us.”

Immediately, that’s phenomenal news for Kershaw and the Dodgers, particularly after David Price was scratched on Friday with “arm stuff,” as Roberts put it, and could be heading toward an IL stint himself. At any rate, the goal in a rehab outing for Kershaw would be three innings where he can “go through the regular rhythm of a start.” Where that outing takes place remains to be determined.

Notably, the Dodgers will be in St. Louis next week while the Triple-A club will be home in Oklahoma City on Tuesday but off on Wednesday. Single-A Rancho will be on the road playing Inland Empire… so essentially they’ll be home.

Logistics aside, if everything goes according to plan, Kershaw could be targeting a September 13-15 return at home against the Diamondbacks.

  1. Out too long can’t build him up in 2 weeks sorry but Kershaw has to go to bullpen for playoffs and should be ready to start In World Series if Dodgers make it cause even though we have the best team,we still have roberts.

  2. Let’s take out all our First Basemens out, then put the shortest guy on the team at first….. Barnes should have went to second, Trea to short, Seager to first, he’s 6’4″ he’d figure it out for an inning or two. Barnes played MANY games at second for us when he first came up, was a shortstop in college. Doofy Dave strikes again! I still might want to lose in the playoffs, Doc gets fired, then we can start a dynasty. Will never happen with this idiot at the helm.
