Older shelter dogs who don't get adopted have a new place they can call home.
"We focus on senior dogs who need a home," said Kathryn Lask, co-founder of Imagine Furever Ranch.
The new home is called the Imagine Furever Ranch in Shawnee. Retirement communities for older dogs is a model that's become more popular over the last few years because older dogs need a little more attention.
"Patience and compassion for these dogs, they're so easily forgotten," Lask said.
She said the shelter operates on funds from the community.
Like many other older dog sanctuaries, Imagine Furever Ranch works with shelters, taking in older dogs that people won't adopt. They say it's been a long time coming.
"We're so excited. We've been working really hard for a whole year. We got the property about a year ago and now are ready to show it off," Lask said.
Right now, the sanctuary currently has six dogs and that's good news. They were supposed to have more but they've already had some adopted and they say that is goal No. 1.
"That might be through foster homes. It might be through adoption if we can't find another avenue there, they can live here for the rest of your lives," Lask said.
She said it is about caring for these pets when they might just need it the most.
Lask said the shelter is in need of volunteers. Visit ImagineFureverRanch.org to help.
