Washington Nationals place Kyle McGowin on 10-Day IL with UCL sprain in right elbow...

Kyle McGowin landed on the Injured List back on July 11th with a strained right biceps, and he was off the mound in the majors until August 24th, two days after he was reinstated. He made five appearances out of the pen upon returning, giving up two hits and one run in 4 ¹⁄₃ innings pitched, but the 29-year-old right-hander felt something was off during a recent throwing session, and a subsequent MRI revealed a UCL sprain in the reliever’s right elbow.

So, this afternoon the Nationals announced that McGowin is going back on the 10-Day IL as they send the results of the MRI to a specialist and try to determine the next steps.

“He was throwing yesterday on the side, said he felt weird,” Washington Nationals’ skipper Davey Martinez explained, after the club announced the news on McGowin and the return of closer Kyle Finnegan from the Paternity List.

“[McGowin] came in, we got him an MRI, and it showed that he had a sprain of the UCL.

“We’re going to send the MRI to a specialist and then go from there. So we’ll see what the doctor says.”

No one ever likes to hear UCL talk with a pitcher, so what’s the plan going forward with the reliever?

“I don’t want to assume anything until we hear back from the doctor and he assesses what’s going on,” Martinez said, “... so as soon as I know more, I’ll let you guys know more, but like I said, he’s going to get an opinion from another doctor, and then we’ll go from there.”

As the manager explained it, there was no one moment where McGowin felt something, but he just a weird feeling when he threw.

“Just was just throwing like they always throw every day,” Martinez said, “just throwing out in the outfield, and he just didn’t feel right.”
