Gleyber Torres received a scare in his rehab appearance on Thursday when he was hit by a pitch on the hand, but he is on his way back to the Yankees ahead of their weekend series against the Orioles.

The Yanks announced Friday that Torres was activated from the IL, with Estevan Florial being sent down as the corresponding move. Florial had just been called up when rosters expanded on Wednesday.

Torres hasn’t played since Aug. 8 due to a sprained thumb, and Andrew Velazquez had handled the bulk of the shortstop duties in Torres’ absence. The two-time All-Star has struggled at the plate this season, batting .253 with a .679 OPS, but his power decline has been most concerning, as he has just six home runs on the year after hitting 38 in 2019.

Torres had appeared to be making strides before his injury, batting .315 over his last 14 games.
