(WGR 550) – Former Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller has been named an assistant coach for Team USA in the 2022 Winter Olympics this February in Beijing, China.
Mike Sullivan of the Pittsburgh Penguins will serve as the head coach for the United States. Other assistants on his staff are John Hynes of the Nashville Predators, former New York Rangers head coach Dan Quinn and Penguins assistant coach Todd Reirden.
Miller played for Team USA twice in the Winter Olympics back in 2010 and 2014. That included the gold medal game in 2010 when Sidney Crosby won it all for Team Canada with an overtime goal. Miller was stellar in those Olympics, posting a 1.35 goals-against average and a .946 save percentage. He was the MVP of the tournament.
After being taken in the fifth round (138th overall) of the 1999 NHL Draft by the Sabres, Miller won the Hobey Baker Award for his play at Michigan State University. Miller spent 11 years with the Sabres, leading them to the Eastern Conference Final twice. In 540 games with Buffalo, Miller was 284-186-57 posting a 2.59 goals-against average and a .915 save percentage. In the playoffs for the Sabres, Miller was 25-22 with a 2.47 goals-against average and a .917 save percentage.
Miller played in the 2007 NHL All-Star Game and won the Vezina Trophy in the 2009-10 season as the NHL's best goaltender. His 391 career wins is 14th in NHL history, and No. 1 among all U.S.-born goaltenders in NHL history.
After leaving Buffalo, Miller played 19 games with the St. Louis Blues, 150 games with the Vancouver Canucks and 87 games with the Anaheim Ducks.
When he retired, Miller said he didn’t want to get into coaching in the NHL right now, because it would take too much time away from his family. That’s why coaching in the Olympics is perfect for him.
Miller said his ultimate goal is to be the guy that builds an NHL team.
